Beginning
in the Spring of 2008, a small group involved in a "40
Days of Community" project at Trinity Bible Church of
Ottawa (TBCO) formed a local food
cupboard. Upon completion of this project,
the
team decided
that more needed to be done to impact world hunger.
Shortly
thereafter, members of the team, Roland and Theresa Poirier,
were introduced to
Silas Owiti-Oduor, a resident of Canada, native to Siaya,
Kenya, by Lynn Fraser, a local business person as well as
long time friend of Silas' wife Kimberly.
Together
they discussed the issues and concerns in the village
of Alego, Siaya. Given the backgrounds of everyone
who was brought together, the answer seemed to be pointing
to
food production and community gardens in the village.
When
the initial team discussed this meeting with the leaders
of TBCO, and notified them
of their plans to visit this village, TBCO took on the project
as one
of
their outreach missions.
